Fall is one of our favorite times of year in Lake Lure. Mornings are cooler, the mountains begin to change color, and plenty is happening throughout Western North Carolina. From apple orchards and local festivals to hiking, golf, and scenic drives, it is an easy time of year to get out and explore.

With Rumbling Bald as your home base, you can spend the day exploring the area and still have plenty to come back to.

Come for the Color

Fall color usually begins at higher elevations before gradually moving down into Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. October is a great time to watch that transition. Head out for a scenic drive, explore a nearby trail, or spend the day right here at Rumbling Bald.

A morning round of golf, a walk from our private trailhead, or simply some time enjoying the view can be just as rewarding as a full day of exploring. There really is no wrong way to take it in.

Explore Apple Country

Fall in Western North Carolina also means apple season. Henderson County, just a short drive from Lake Lure, is well known for its orchards, farm markets, and roadside stands. Fresh apples, cider, baked goods, and other seasonal favorites make it an easy addition to a fall getaway.

While the North Carolina Apple Festival takes place over Labor Day weekend, apple season continues well into the fall, with many area orchards welcoming visitors throughout October.

Spend a few hours exploring apple country, then make your way back to Lake Lure for dinner and a quiet evening in the mountains.

Find a Local Fall Festival

There is plenty happening closer to home as well.

The Lake Lure Fall Arts & Crafts Festival returns October 17th and 18th, bringing artisans, food, entertainment, and activities to Lake Lure.

Nearby, Chimney Rock State Park also has several seasonal events planned throughout October, including National Trails State Day on October 17th and a Fall Color Hike on October 24th.

These events are a great excuse to get out and explore, but you don’t need a full itinerary to enjoy this time of year.

Make a Weekend of It

One of the best things about fall at Rumbling Bald is having options. Play a round of golf. Take a hike. Explore apple country. Visit a local festival. Enjoy a good meal and settle in for a quiet evening. Or leave the schedule open and see where the day takes you.

Whether you come for the color, a weekend of exploring, or simply a few quiet days away, Rumbling Bald makes an easy home base for enjoying fall in Lake Lure.

Fall does not last long in the mountains. Come enjoy it while it is here.
