Rumbling Bald Readies for Spring with New Golf Packages

36-Hole Resort on North Carolina’s Stunning Lake Lure Ideal for Golf Groups, Buddy Trips

The PGA TOUR is back on the mainland, making its California and then Florida swings. The Masters commercials have already started to run on CBS during select sporting events. In short, the 2020 golf season is effectively upon us.

“We want golfers to get here, unplug, play 18 or 36 holes and shed the stress of the hurry-up, always-on lifestyle we lead,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “Post round, they can relax over a hearty meal and a cold beverage, then retreat to the deck of their vacation rental with a cigar or night cap.”

And in that spirit, Rumbling Bald has rolled out its new golf packages for the year, customized for golf groups of any size and ideal for weekend or weekday buddy trips.

The Hole-in-One

“Getting away for a weekend with a small group of golf buddies is still the most popular option at most golf resorts, and our Hole-in-One package caters to these smaller crews,” says Golf Group Sales Manager JP Doran.

Starting at $345* per person, the resort’s “Hole-in-One” package features a two-night stay, two rounds of golf on the Apple Valley and Bald Mountain courses, breakfast both days and complimentary, unlimited range balls. Lodging options include the recently updated Apple Valley Studios and two- and four-bedroom Fairway Villas. Doran is quick to point out that the golf season at Rumbling Bald is year-round, and that Bradford Pear and Eastern Redbud trees are already in bloom.

“This is a great time to lock in a trip for the spring, or for an impromptu golf getaway in February or March,” he says.

The Ryder Cup Package

Paying homage to the 2020 Ryder Cup at Destination Kohler’s famed Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Rumbling Bald is offering a limited availability “Ryder Cup Package.” The resort’s expert golf vacation planners will design an exciting, Ryder Cup team formatted event for golf groups in search of an unforgettable experience.

The Ryder Cup Package starts at $589* per person and includes three nights lodging; three rounds of golf scored and handicapped; complimentary replays on either course; a team shirt and resort hat; private, one-hour opening reception with wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres included; and unlimited use of the practice facilities.

“Bias aside, this might be our coolest promotion of the year,” says Head of Golf Operations Adam Bowles. “It gets the competitive juices flowing, provides memories for a lifetime and is a solid value with all the inclusions.”

Golf Groups, Done Right

For groups of 12 or more, Rumbling Bald offers gratis golf for group leaders upon booking their first trip to the resort. The “12+ Comp” is ideal for PGA Professional-member trips, tournaments, or large golf buddy trips.

“We get it, group leaders put a lot of time and effort into planning large golf getaways and we like to provide a reward for their hard work,” Doran says.

Contrasting, yet Complementary, Golf Experiences

Located on the north end of stunning Lake Lure, Rumbling Bald is one of Western North Carolina’s only multi-course golf resorts. An hour’s drive from Asheville and less than two hours from Charlotte, it features two contrasting 18-hole layouts: W.B. Lewis-designed Bald Mountain and Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley.

Rumbling Bald’s marquee course, Apple Valley stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features expansive views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of shots at Apple Valley are either level or downhill, virtually unheard for a mountain course. Shimmering mountain lakes adorn 12 holes, but water only occasionally comes into play.

Apple Valley front nine aerial

Bald Mountain, at 6,300 yards, is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.”  A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green.

Bald Mountain #15 and #16

The resort’s 150 vacation rental homes, condos, and studios are ideal for golf groups of various sizes and feature golf course and mountain views. Post round, golfers can relax at Legends on the Lake, casual dining on shores of Lake Lure, or grab a hearty sandwich and cold drink at Pinnacle Southern Kitchen at the Apple Valley clubhouse.

Rumbling Bald is rich with amenities and activities, including scenic Lake Lure boat tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, a full-service spa and hiking trails. It’s the perfect basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Stress-free Valentine’s Day

When people think of Valentine’s Day, they picture romance—red hearts, fine chocolate, the perfect gift, and the perfect love story. But with all those expectations, it’s easy to forget what the day is truly about: spending meaningful time with the one you love. The pressure of cards, flowers, fancy dinners, and expensive gifts can take away from simply enjoying each other’s company. That’s why the best advice for a stress-free Valentine’s Day is to talk with your partner about how you both want to celebrate—then let the day unfold in a way that feels right for you.

At Rumbling Bald, we believe in a Valentine’s Day that’s about connection, not complication. Our Valentine’s Getaway is designed to let you focus on what truly matters. Settle into one of our cozy vacation homes, condos, or studios, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Lake Lure and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you’re an adventurous duo or prefer a more relaxed escape, you’ll find the perfect way to celebrate your love here.

Love a little friendly competition? Challenge each other to a round of golf with our Stay & Play Specials, or hit the tennis and pickleball courts for a fun match—maybe even team up with another couple for added excitement. Looking to indulge in an intimate dining experience? Savor a chef-inspired Valentine’s menu at The Gardens, specially curated for the occasion.

For those seeking relaxation, The Spa & Salon at Rumbling Bald offers a serene escape with luxurious massages, revitalizing treatments, and a tranquil atmosphere that melts stress away.

Looking to venture out? Just an hour away, the award-winning Blue Ridge Distillery, home of Defiant Whisky, offers exclusive tours and tastings. Or, take a scenic drive to Asheville, NC, where you’ll find vibrant shops, live music, and top-tier dining—before returning to your peaceful lakeside hideaway.

No matter how you celebrate, a Valentine’s Getaway at Rumbling Bald lets you focus on what matters most: each other. Call 828-694-3016 to reserve your stay, or check availability online by visiting RumblingBaldLodging.com and entering code VDAY14 to receive 14% OFF your stay.

Three reasons to get excited about the golf season ahead at Rumbling Bald

One of the many reasons we live in the Carolinas, and that golfers from throughout the U.S. love to visit here: there really is no off season. Sure, January brings highs in the 40s and 50s and even the occasional dusting of snow.

But with more than 220 days of sunshine, it never lasts long. And the first signs of spring appear in late February as Eastern redbuds and cherry trees bloom.

So yes, have-clubs-will travel types, teeing it up year-round in the Old North State is definitely “a thing.”

This year, Rumbling Bald is readying for a particularly exciting and eventful “peak” golf season getting underway in just a couple months. And there are so many powerful tailwinds propelling the $84 billion industry and great game ahead. Participation has normalized around 24 million golfers according to the National Golf Foundation.

More and more Millennials and Gen-Xers are picking up the game, replacing members of the Baby Boomer and Silent Generations who are aging out. Junior golf is as popular as ever, with 2.5 million young golfers hitting the fairways in 2019.

And refreshingly, the motto at golf courses and clubs throughout the U.S. has shifted from “survive and advance” to “innovate and prosper.”

“In 2020, we want golfers to get here, unplug, relax and repeat,” says General Manager Jeff Geisler. “They’ll be hard-pressed not to shed the stress of today’s hectic pace of life while playing Apple Valley or Bald Mountain and enjoying a drink or cigar on a deck afterward.”

We couldn’t agree more. And here are three reasons to get excited about the golf season ahead at Rumbling Bald.

1. Apple Valley Gets New Greens

Designed by noted golf course architect and Pinehurst native Dan Maples, Apple Valley will start its transition from its original bentgrass greens to smooth-rolling Champion Bermuda in June. Champion was chosen for its superior performance profile, heat tolerance and maintainability. It has speeds up to two feet faster than other ultradwarf cultivars as measured by stimpmeter. “We provide our golfers with the best possible experiences and Champion Bermuda checked all the boxes,” says Geisler. “Dan Maples’ layout and routing at Apple Valley is so pure from tee to green that smooth, true rolling Champion greens are the perfect fit.” Apple Valley is in elite company with its conversion from bentgrass to Champion Bermuda.

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, site of the 2017 PGA Championship, and Pinehurst No. 2, host of the 1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024 U.S. Opens, have undergone the transition in recent years.

“We did our homework and Champion Bermuda came out ahead by a longshot,” says Rumbling Bald Director of Golf Course Maintenance Matt Lovell, CGCS. “We’re excited to see golfers’ reactions and receive their feedback once the conversion is complete this summer.”

Apple Valley is open March 9 through May and will close in early June for the conversion to Champion Bermuda. It is scheduled to reopen in late August.

2. Mountain Golf at Bald Mountain

In addition to Apple Valley, golfers enjoy Bald Mountain, the resort’s original 18-hole mountain-style course. Designed by George Cobb protégé W.B. Lewis, Bald Mountain is a 6,300-yard shotmaker’s venue conveniently located next to lodging and amenities.

Bald Mountain, at 6,300 yards, is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.”

A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green.

“Bald Mountain feels and plays like a mountain course, whereas Apple Valley plays more like a traditional layout that happens to be in the mountains,” says Director of Golf Operations Adam Bowles.

3. Buddy Trips Done Right

Rumbling Bald’s 150 vacation rental homes, condos and studios are ideal for golf groups of various sizes and feature golf course and mountain views.

Post round, golfers can relax at Legends on the Lake, casual dining on shores of Lake Lure, or grab a hearty sandwich and cold drink at Pinnacle Southern Kitchen at the Apple Valley clubhouse.

For groups who want to branch out into other experiences, the resort is rich with amenities and activities, including scenic Lake Lure boat tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, a full-service spa and hiking trails.

It’s the perfect basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

2020 Golf Season

Greetings Members!

The 2020 golf season is coming up fast and I know you are all looking forward to seeing more favorable golf weather to draw you out of your winter slumber, I certainly am. While the cool temperatures and drizzly days have settled in, our staff has been hard at work creating a schedule of events, a first-class merchandise program, and a plan for giving you the best golf course conditions you deserve. I am going to run through a few upcoming changes and plans for 2020 in this edition. As always, if you ever have a question, please call me at 828-694-3040 or email me directly at abowles@rumblingbald.com.

Rumbling Bald selects Champions Bermuda for greens at Apple Valley Golf Course

Big things are coming in 2020 for our Apple Valley Golf Course. We are converting our 36-year-old, original, bent grass greens, to a premium Champions Bermudagrass. It is the putting surface you deserve, and they will fit perfectly with the championship layout of Apple Valley. We will be sending updates to everyone as we move through this process and we will have an opportunity for you to get out and play the new greens before everyone else. Stay tuned for that date.

Improvements made at Bald Mountain Golf Course

Bald Mountain has seen some minor, but critical, areas of tree removal. Some of the areas that have been improved are on #12, #13, #14 and #15. There are still many more areas that we will need to address to ensure you have a high-quality golf course. Bald Mountain is in great winter shape and we hope you will take advantage of those few days that the sun decides to peek its head out.

New World Handicap System

The World Handicap System is now a part of our life and we have adopted it here at the resort. Some of you may know that they have had a shaky start in the CGA with implementing the new system, but they are making great strides daily. If you need more information on the changes, please visit https://www.carolinasghinsupport.org/World-Handicapping/pg/whs-education-center . There is a tremendous amount of information and videos to give you an idea of what has changed and what is new. If you have a handicap here at the resort and would like to continue in 2020, please come by the Bald Mountain pro shop and pay your annual dues of $22.

Golf Memberships Program

We launched a golf membership program in 2018 and it did exactly what we hoped, it succeeded. It gave our golfers an opportunity to get more involved with our golf program. We are still offering the golf membership and have placed a good deal of emphasis on the advantages of joining the program. Please visit our webpage https://rumblingbald.com/spectacular-mountain-golf/golf-memberships/ or come by either pro shop for more information. If you are on the edge of wanting to play more golf this upcoming year and want to maximize your time and money on the golf course, do not wait any longer. Come and see what we have to offer.

2020 Schedule of Events

Our 2020 Schedule of Events is listed here. We have a wide variety of options for every type of golfer. We offer a Women’s Golf Association, Men’s Golf Association, Points and Greenies, Boys Night Out, Girls Night Out, and as always, a schedule that includes events for the player who is looking for fun and events for players who seek competition.  Please take a moment and print out the schedule and begin making plans. We hope to see you on the golf course soon!

Rumbling Bald selects Champion Bermuda for greens at Apple Valley Golf Course

36-Hole Resort on Stunning Lake Lure to Roll-Out Superior Putting Experience.

LAKE LURE, N.C. – Rumbling Bald, the 36-hole golf resort on North Carolina’s stunning Lake Lure, has selected Champion Bermuda turf grass for the greens on Apple Valley, its marquee course.

“We provide our golfers with the best possible experiences and Champion Bermuda checked all the boxes,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “Dan Maples’ layout and routing at Apple Valley is so pure from tee to green that smooth, true rolling Champion greens are the perfect fit.”

“We did our homework and Champion Bermuda came out ahead by a longshot,” says Rumbling Bald Director of Golf Course Maintenance Matt Lovell, CGCS. “We’re excited to see golfers’ reactions and receive their feedback once the conversion is complete this summer.”

Located along the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, golf is played year-round at Rumbling Bald. Champion Bermuda demands less irrigation, fertilizer and pesticides than bentgrass, and is suitable to North Carolina’s warm summer nights and temperate winter climate.

In addition to Apple Valley, golfers enjoy Bald Mountain, the resort’s original 18-hole mountain-style course. Designed by George Cobb protégé W.B. Lewis, Bald Mountain is a 6,300-yard shotmaker’s venue conveniently located next to lodging and amenities.

Apple Valley will close in early June and is scheduled to reopen in late August. For a full list of course maintenance dates and to learn more about Rumbling Bald’s golf courses and packages, visit www.rumblingbald.com

Facts & Tips for playing at Apple Valley Golf Course

At Rumbling Bald Resort, we consider ourselves lucky to be home to two beautiful championship golf courses. We want everyone to enjoy playing our courses so we’ve put together a list of quick tips and facts for playing at Apple Valley Golf Course.

Facts

  1. Large fairways and inviting greens make this course much more playable for the average golfer.
  2. The back nine at Apple may be the prettiest of the two courses. It runs right up to Young’s Mountain and then back down again.
  3. As a par 72, 18-hole course it contains four par 5 holes, four par 3 holes, and ten par 4 holes.
  4. Large undulated greens
  5. Designed by Dan Maples opened in 1986 and has been dubbed one of the most beautiful mountain courses around by Golf Digest’s “Places to Play”
  6. The course measures 6,756 yards from the tips.
  7. It has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.2 USGA rating.

Tips

  1. Pull out the driver and let it rip. Apple Valley has a wonderful set of par 5’s that will challenge even the longest hitters to reach in two shots.
  2. The game changes a little when you get to the greens. They are very undulated and large, so be very accurate with your irons.
  3. Hole #14, par 3, is a picturesque shot over a rocky creek bed. Take enough club to carry the trouble…going long here is not a bad idea.
  4. Hole #11 is a shorter par 4 that gives you a wonderful view of Bald Mountain in the background. It leaves you with a short iron or wedge into a small green fronted by a lake.
  5. Hole #18, par 5, is a sure 3 shot hole for everyone. Play if safe off the tee and set yourself up for your favorite yardage into the green. The green is surrounded by bunkers and water so be careful and take enough club.

  2. Small greens and narrow tree-lined fairways.
  3. All putts tend to break towards Bald Mountain.
  4. Scene location from the hit movie “Dirty Dancing” on hole #16.
  5. The course has four sets of tees and measures 6,283 yards.
  6. Course rating of 70.9 and a slope rating of 128.

Tips

  1. Leave the driver in the bag and make sure you concentrate on hitting the fairway.
  2. The greens are small in size and demand your full attention.
  3. The fairways are tight and tree-lined, you will surely meet trouble if you miss them.
  4. On hole #13 hit it as close as you can to the 100-yard marker to make sure you have a view of the green below.
  5. Hole #4, par 3, take one less club off the tee to make up for the elevation change.
  6. The course begins and ends with a short par 5 so take advantage of it.

World Golf Handicap System

Members,

Members of the handicap committee, and myself, attended a seminar on the upcoming changes to the handicap system as we know it. It is now called the World Handicap System. There are a wide variety of changes and we liked what we saw. I have listed below a few areas you need to look over and become familiar with the changes. We will all be learning these new changes at the same time as you so there will be a learning curve for our staff as well. Ultimately it is up to the golfer to correctly know the rules of the game and the ways to post their rounds of golf.

The new World Handicapping is scheduled to start on January 6th, 2020. There will be a downtime from January 1st – 5th where no posting will take place as they updating the system. This new system of handicapping is significantly different than the handicapping we have used for the last 25 years. Listed below are the 10 most important changes that every golfer should be aware of. These are covered here in summary format. For more exact details, please refer to the new Rules of Handicapping manual. If you have any questions about the new World Handicapping System, please contact your club’s professional staff or your club’s handicap committee for answers.

The 5 Things You Need to Know About the New World Handicap System (WHS)

Beginning in 2020 a brand-new set of Rules for Handicapping will be introduced globally.

  1. Your Handicap Index may change.
But that’s ok! Finally, players around the world will have an apples-to-apples handicap. Your new Handicap In-dex will be more responsive to good scores by averaging your eight best score out of your most recent 20 (currently, it’s 10 out of 20 with a .96 multiplier). In short, your Handicap Index will be determined by your demonstrated ability and the consistency of scores. In most cases for golfers in the U.S., it will change less than one stroke.
  2. You need to know your Course Handicap.
In the new system, your Course Handicap will be the number of strokes needed to play to par. This will result in greater variance in that number and presents a change, as historically it has represented the number of strokes needed to play to the Course Rating. This is a good thing, as par is an easy number to remember. The target score for the day? Par plus Course Handicap. The Course Rating will now be inherent within the calculation to be more intuitive and account for competing from different tees.
  3. Net Double Bogey.
The maximum hole score for each player will be limited to a Net Double Bogey. This adjustment is more consistent from hole to hole than the Equitable Stroke Control procedure. Net Double Bogey is already used in many other parts of the world and the calculation is simple: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive.
  4. Your Handicap Index will be revised daily.
One way that handicapping is being modernized is a player’s Handicap Index will update daily (which will provide a fairer indication of a player’s ability at the moment) if the player submitted a score the day before. On days where the player does not submit a score, no update will take place.
  5. Safeguards in the new system.
The new system will limit extreme upward movement of a Handicap Index, automatically and immediately reduce a Handicap Index when an exceptional score of at least 7 strokes better is posted, and account for abnormal course or weather conditions to ensure that scores reflect when a course plays significantly different than its established Course Rating and Slope Rating. These safeguards help maintain the accuracy of a Handicap Index, greater integrity within the system and promote fun and fair play for golfers of all abilities.
