The golf season is just around the corner and in preparation we want to address an idea that golfers neglect – golf fitness. The idea of golf fitness has been around for about 15 years, since the arrival of Tiger Woods and other players with a high level of fitness. Players are usually so concerned with their equipment, their swing, or their outfit, that they completely forget about the physical aspect. However, studies show that golfers with low handicaps have better hip and shoulder strength, as well as, greater flexibility and balance.
Many golfers are not in tune with what it really takes to physically complete a round of golf. The course can be very taxing. The weather for the day, the pace of the round and how many shots you are taking to finish a hole, are all contributors in your physical makeup during a round. An average 18 hole round of golf takes 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete. You will walk around 2 miles as you play and even more if the course you are playing operates under the dreaded “Cart Path Only” condition. Add in the fact that you are swinging a club with some weight at a high rate of speed, your muscles can begin to weaken and get strained. Your legs begin to get tired, your back starts to tighten up, and you lose your mental focus due to being flat out tired. How many times after a round have you gone home and simply crashed on the couch or taken long hot shower? Our guess is quite a few.
Most golfers hit a wall around hole 14 and begin to suffer in their golf game because they are losing strength. Now, what if you gave your body the attention it deserves so that it maintains the strength it needs throughout your round?
