It’s the season of color and the season of adventure. There’s something about fall in Western North Carolina that just feels right. Crisp mornings, colorful mountain views, and a slower rhythm that invites you to relax. Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer retreat, Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure is the perfect place to stay and soak in the season.
When to Visit
Here’s what the 2025 leaf season is expected to look like:
-
Mid-October (Oct 11–23): Higher elevations like Grandfather Mountain and Mount Pisgah reach peak color.
- Late October (Oct 23–30): Asheville, Pisgah Forest, and DuPont begin turning.
- Late October to Early November (Oct 30–Nov 6): Peak color around Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park. Late October is ideal if you’re looking for vibrant color without the early-season crowds.

Day Trips to Local Towns
Fall is a great time to explore nearby small towns, each with its own character and a few hidden gems.
-
Old Fort, Black Mountain, and Asheville – Start your day with a cinnamon roll (or two) from GoGo’s Cinnamon Rolls in Old Fort. Grab lunch and a beer at Hillman Beer, or visit the Arrowhead Gallery. Spend an afternoon in Black Mountain and check out Recess Coffee and Baked Goods for a delicious pastry, or if you’re in town for dinner, stop in The Pure & Proper for a cozy, delectable meal. Venture into Asheville for a culinary experience, live music, shopping, and plenty of beer. It’s called Beer City, after all! If beer’s not your style, a must-try is Urban Orchard Cider Co. in South Slope for some seriously creative and flavorful hard ciders.
- Rutherfordton and Forest City – Visit the Bechtler House or grab a cup at Small Town Coffee Roasters. In Forest City, walk the Thermal Belt Rail Trail or stop by Smith’s Drugs, an old-fashioned soda fountain.
- Tryon, Columbus, and Saluda – Browse books and local art in Tryon, or visit the Fine Arts Center. Stroll the courthouse square in Columbus, or relax in Veterans Park. In Saluda, don’t miss The Purple Onion and Heartwood Gallery along historic Main Street. These one- and two-light towns are easy to explore and full of fall charm.
