Each spring, Lake Lure welcomes collegiate rowing teams for early-season training on its calm waters, and for decades, Rumbling Bald has been proud to host them. This year carries added significance.

A powerful sign of hope is gliding across the water at Lake Lure. Collegiate rowing has officially returned, bringing with it a sense of renewal, resilience, and the unmistakable rhythm of the lake coming back to life. For the first time since Hurricane Helene, crew teams are back on the lake. While Lake Lure continues to refill following extensive cleanup efforts, select programs have been granted limited access to train. Their return offers one of the first visible signs of activity on the water, and these athletes represent more than just a sport; they symbolize progress, perseverance, and the beginning of a long-awaited comeback season.

From early morning practices to the quiet determination of teams training against a breathtaking mountain backdrop, it’s a reminder of what makes this place so special, and what’s still to come.

A Meaningful Step Forward

This moment carries real meaning for the Lake Lure community.

“Seeing crew teams back on the water reflects the hard work that’s gone into restoring the lake, and we’re proud to welcome these teams back to Rumbling Bald as one of the first steps toward normal activity returning.”
— Mark Eades, Marketing Director

For more than 1.5 years, the Town of Lake Lure has led an extensive restoration effort, supported by partners across the community. Rumbling Bald was proud to assist by providing access through our beach area to help expedite cleanup work on the water.

Why Lake Lure Matters for Rowing

Lake Lure has long been a reliable spring training destination for collegiate rowing. Its calm conditions and consistent environment allow teams to focus on preparation ahead of the season. That consistency is what brings many of these programs back year after year. The significance of the collegiate rowers’ return has gained attention from several news outlets. Looking Ahead to Summer

The lake continues to fill, with a return to full recreational use targeted for May 2026. In the Town of Lake Lure’s latest lake level update on March 21st, Lake Lure’s “current lake level is about 985 Mean Sea Level (MSL), 4.5 feet below full pond, which is 990.5 MSL.”

As the reopening timeline approaches, the presence of rowing teams offers an early look at what’s ahead.
