It’s simple, straight-forward and easy to plan, book and execute.

Rumbling Bald’s Hole-in-One Golf Package has long been our most popular golf stay-and-play option, and for good reason. Simply put, it has everything golfers need, and nothing they don’t.

Starting at $345 per person, it includes two nights’ lodging, two rounds of golf on our Apple Valley and Bald Mountain courses, exclusive access to amenities, breakfast both days, and complimentary use of our upgraded practice facilities.

That stated, every golf group leader could use a little push in the right direction when it comes to planning his or her golf buddies trip this spring or summer. And like a good travel caddie, we’re here to offer said nudge with a sample Hole-in-One itinerary.

Pre-Trip

Proper lodging can be the difference between an epic, and epic failure, of a golf trip. The Hole-in-One package features two options as priced: Apple Valley Studios and Fairway Villas. Apple Valley Studios accommodate two to four guests (depending upon the number of beds and sleeper sofa) and feature kitchenettes, breakfast nooks and small outdoor decks. They’re situated across the road from the Apple Valley.

Located along Bald Mountain, two-bedroom Fairway Villas accommodate between six and eight guests depending on the bed and sleeper sofa configuration. Villa units have full kitchens, stacked washer-dryer units, flat screen TVs and patios, many of which overlook both the golf course and Bald Mountain (the mountain). Dining at Legends on the Lake, the Lake Lure recreation area and other amenities are a short walk away.

Day One

Rumbling Bald is less than a half day’s drive from major Southeastern cities like Macon and Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro, North Carolina, and Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina. Check-in time for our vacation rentals is 3 p.m., but feel free to arrive early to grab lunch, hit some balls at one of our two practice ranges, or to simply get the lay of the land.

Once your group is checked-in, head to Legends on the Lake for a relaxing dinner (currently open Wed. – Sun., 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.) Start with house-made chips sprinkled with blue cheese and bacon crumbles, or broiled meatballs in vodka sauce finished-off with parmesan and mozzarella.

Legends features an expansive pizza selection, highlighted by the “Signature Pizza” topped with house-made Italian sausage, seasonal mushrooms, red onion, arugula, mozzarella and shaved parmesan. The star of the show, however, is the grilled, 14-ounce ribeye with Rosemary parmesan steak fries.

Enjoy an after-dinner drink (perhaps a nice Cabernet Sauvignon) with our famous Skillet Cookie with vanilla ice cream. A friendly game of cards on the deck with a cigar might be in order or turn in for a good night’s sleep before a big day of golf tomorrow.

Day Two

Up and at it for the first round of golf, and we recommend Bald Mountain to get the trip started. Bald Mountain, a classic W.B. Lewis-designed mountain-style layout that recently underwent a series of enhancements to beautify its surrounds, increase overall playability and restore original shot values. The result is a golf course that’s as good, and as fun, as it has ever been.

Playing to a golfer-friendly 6,300 yards, Bald Mountain renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.” A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green.

Day Three

Day three is all about Apple Valley, our marquee course designed by Dan Maples, son of Ellis Maples, who apprenticed under Donald Ross in Pinehurst. Currently, there’s a grab-and-go menu available for golfers at Pinnacle Southern Kitchen from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., and we’re working to expand breakfast hours and will be introducing a new menu later this spring.

After a few warm-up swings on the range, it’s time to tee off on this Maples gem. Apple Valley, stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features expansive views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of shots on the course are either level or downhill, virtually unheard of for a mountain course.

Shimmering mountain lakes adorn 12 holes, but water only occasionally comes into play. And last August, Apple Valley reopened with brand new Champion Bermuda greens. The new putting surfaces are firm, fast and fair, and the feedback from golfers so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

Post round, your departure day from Rumbling Bald doesn’t have to be your departure from the region. On your way out, or another day, explore the beautiful Lake Lure region and discover why so many people have fallen in love with Western North Carolina.
